What are Mastery Scores?

Mastery scores are the total number of questions you have under each mastery level. Your mastery level for a question is your current level of understanding of that question based on your recent performance with that question. Your mastery level for each question is displayed on the top right of the question while you're practicing. Read more about where to find mastery levels here.

Where can I see a summary of my Mastery Scores?

A summary of your mastery scores is available for every Japanese practice set. Simply load up a practice set and scroll down to see your current summary of mastery scores for that practice set.

Your mastery scores are called the Journey to Japanese Mastery because over time as you continue to practice, your scores should all fall into the Mastered category. But be warned, this is no easy task and will take a long time so don't get discouraged! Only the truly dedicated and proficient will get all questions 'Mastered'.

Even if you're able to achieve 100% mastery, you'll need to maintain a grade of at least 80% on each question to keep it in there. This is the true beauty of Mastery scores at JPDrills, it's an indication of your current understanding in a way that doesn't forget your hard work and dedication.

How are Mastery Scores calculated?

Mastery scores are calculated using your recent performance on individual questions. Your grades only take your most recent 50-question attempts and weigh your most recent answers more importantly. A full description of how JPDrills calculates weighted grades is here.

Over time, as you continue to practice more and more, you'll have a decent assessment of where your level of understanding is at for that Japanese practice set. With the Question Difficulty settings JPDrills provides, you'll be able to drill down into those lists so you can get laser-focused on mastering them through conscious repetition and practice.

Mastery LevelGrades MethodMastery Symbol
NewYour first attempt at this question
NoviceYour weighted grade is between 0 and 50%
ProficientYour weighted grade is either,
  1. 51-80%, or
  2. 80-100% with 5 attempts or less.
MasteredYour weighted grade is above 80% and you've practiced this more than 5 times.

Why did my mastered questions score decrease just now?

With any assessment of performance, your most recent results are what matters. JPDrills calculates your mastery scores after each question. If a question that was mastered in the past is answered incorrectly in the present enough times, then that question is no longer considered mastered. This is because JPDrills aims to give an accurate indication of your current understanding of each question so that you can correctly gauge your readiness for the JLPT or to use the Question Difficulty settings to focus on what has become rusty and needing review today.
