What is JPDrills?

JPDrills is a JLPT practice tool focused on mastery above all else. It doesn't just focus on daily practice goals or points, it centers around giving you clarity about your ultimate objective: getting better at Japanese.

The Ultimate Goal: Mastery

JPDrills is built on the principle of mastery, which means that we want our users to truly master the Japanese language.

The objective at JPDrills is simple: answer a question correctly 80% of the time and have practiced it at least five times.

This sounds simple enough, but it isn't necessarily easy. JPDrills specializes in measuring, tracking your progress, and letting you know where you're at.

What are the main reasons for using JPDrills?

JPDrills isn't a pdf of JLPT questions. It's very different. Here are a few reasons why Japanese learners choose JPDrills to practice their Japanese:

  1. Mastery-Based Review: JPDrills is built on the principle of mastery. We want our users to truly master the Japanese language. We do this with a combination of methods. We combine a spaced-repetition algorithm  (SRS) with mastery grading and then give you points for answering questions correctly. The SRS algorithm gives you questions at just the right moment before your brain forgets, mastery grading lets you know the outcome of your practice and a long-term goal, and points give you short term goals!

  2. Customization: Tired of the SRS having all the power and controlling what you practice next? Now you can decide! If you're preparing for the test and want concentrated focus on your most difficult questions, we give you the option. Simply disable the difficulty levels you don't want to see and the algorithm will only give you the difficulty you want! Easy (and efficient!).

  3. Comprehensive Coverage: We can always have more high-quality questions, but we believe we have a good start. From JLPT N5 to N1 difficulty levels, we've got 15,000 questions and 3,000 answer explanations ready to be mastered.

  4. Motivating Practice: We get how boring repeating questions can be.We know it's good, but sometimes can't bring ourselves to continue... so we created a weekly league system to give you something permanent for all that hard-earned practice! Get experience points (XP) for answering questions correctly and score in the league. Your XP is ranked against other JPDrills member's XP. If you're at the top, you graduate to the next league. If you're at the bottom, you get demoted to the previous league. We suggest focusing on the leagues for short term motivation instead of you overal mastery scores because your mastery scores are difficult to improve and take a lot of time, as they should, while leagues can give you that immediate feeling of progression that we all enjoy.
